Frequently Asked Questions

Q: We are just a small business, why do we need technical support for our computers?

A: All businesses need reliable data systems, big or small. Ratio-wise, small businesses take a large hit if a single workstation crashes without a recovery plan.

Q; What kind of tech threats do we face being a business?

A: Well, there are different kinds of threats. Direct connection from an unknown source happens all the time, whether you are a business or a home user. With more to lose, you might want to protect against that. Spyware is always a threat. Viruses can devastate a business, small to global. The bottom line is, there's plenty to think about...

Q: All of our computers have gotten very slow, why?

A: Spyware is an obvious guess. First we would suggest using a browser other than Internet Explorer. IE does a great job as a browser, but offers a lot of vulnerability to a computer because of "User Friendly" interactivity with web sites. Try Firefox, it's small, free & safer. We also recommend running at least 2 anti-spyware programs. Try Spybot and Microsoft AntiSpyware as they are both free. You might try AdAware, it's also free.

Q: What does Coast IT offer that others don't?

A: Coast Information Technology offers onsite support, web, e-mail and DNS hosting, product availability, real time consulting, etcetera. It's all quite less expensive than employing a technician.

Q: Is having the auto update on my anti-virus enough to protect me?

A: Having the auto update on is good, though you should run a manual update weekly, no matter what anti-virus you run..

Q: Can spyware affect my daily business?

A: Spyware can definitely affect your business. Your public IP address can be blocked in blacklist databases, personal information can be stolen, and your computers can slow down to a crawl.

Q: I'm starting to get a lot of SPAM, what steps can I take to limit the Spam?

A: There is an entire sector of the industry devoted to SPAM and avoiding SPAM, please click here for more information.

Q: What anti-virus do you recommend?

A: We are currently reccomending an Eset product, NOD32. This product has out performed most all other anti-virus products for years and won't slow down your computer like the products you are more familiar with. Norton, McAfee & the like are just too bloated these days, they slow a machine down. We have it installed an a 486 slave application machine and can hardly notice the impact of the AV program.

Q: How do I check my DNS settings?

A: That depends on what you are checking the DNS server settings on. For now we'll focus on windows Windows XP.
Click on Start > Run > type cmd > click OK. A command box opens, type ipconfig /all & hit Enter. The DNS server(s) should display towards the bottom of the list.
